Let’s just say… neither of us planned on meeting our future spouse on Bourbon Street — but here we are!
It all started in New Orleans, where Kevin lived and I was visiting with some girlfriends to celebrate my 27th birthday. We arrived late, and I was fully committed to staying in. But my friend? She had other plans. “We’re in New Orleans, get up, we’re going out!” And just like that, I was bar-hopping down Bourbon Street.
There I was, not trying to find love, vibing at a bar called Chris Owens, and out of no where I hear my friend shout, “It’s my friend’s birthday!!” Next thing I know, she’s pulling over this guy and introducing me to Kevin.
He grabbed my hand, kissed it and I immediately thought, “Okayyy… HE IS CUTE!” We started talking and he offered to buy a round of shots for me and my friend. I asked his age, because he looked like he had just graduated high school. He told me he was 24. My friend immediately shouted, “24 minus what, 10?” (Kevin did look pretty young)
Then came the moment of truth: the bartender asked for his ID. Kevin pulled it out… and dropped it. Being the nosy person I am, I grabbed it, looked at it, and immediately noticed that this was not him. I glanced around, spotted the actual person on the ID standing behind him, and called him out claiming the ID belonged to him. Turns out, it was his cousin’s ID and Kevin was actually 19 years old. Yes! Nineteen. I was 27 and rocking the cradle.
Apparently, he and his cousin used to swap IDs so Kevin could sneak into the bars. Before the end of the night, I grabbed his phone and put my number in for him to text me.
Despite him being so young, we ended up having a great time. We hung out a few more times while I was in town, nothing too serious, just living in the moment.
Once I returned to Houston, I honestly thought that was the end of our fling. But the universe had other plans for us. We kept talking and texting and next thing you know, Kevin started making regular trips to Houston. One thing led to another… and now, here we are — seven years later, planning our wedding!
I still can’t believe our story started in a bar, with a fake ID, a round of shots, and a guy who definitely wasn’t old enough to be there. And somehow, it turned into the best thing that’s ever happened to either of us.
